So we’ve officially completed the first week since Mascot was dropped off last Friday.
My last post had a video showing some clips of the first couple of days, including our first lesson with Ellen. Since then, I have been working on Ellen’s comments including impulsion and straightness, both of which have been interesting. Monday and Wednesday were some of the best rides I’ve had on him yet. He was responsive and willing to please. Tuesday and Friday he was stopping a lot and would respond with less impulsion when I asked him forward. I find it interesting, as he doesn’t respond to praise as most horses do, which makes it harder to reward him and ensure he knows he is being a good boy.
My favorite day was actually yesterday (Thursday). My sister came and visited me this week, so I put her on my steady TWH to hack while I worked with Mascot. It was our first time working with another horse nearby, and they both did great! I took Mascot to the water expecting a fight since I’ve experienced him jumping water crossings in the past, but he didn’t hesitate in the least and eagerly SWAM circles around me. It was so amusing to watch, he absolutely loved it! Ended the day riding bareback in a hackamore back up to the barn. This is going to be a seriously cool horse.
I have been feeding him his normal amount of grain, and added beet pulp and electrolytes. He is already starting to lift his back more, and should start to develop over it in the coming weeks.
I do a lot of stretches with my horses; when I pick the feet I use that opportunity to pull front legs forward and open out to stretch that shoulder, and pull hind legs up under the horse and cross over towards opposite side. He is not entirely comfortable with this yet, but I think it helps loosen them up and engage the proper muscles, before I even get on.
He doesn’t mind being groomed and stretched, but his favorite activity is eating (who can argue with that) so I end our time together letting him graze while I massage his topline. As I mentioned in the intro video, relaxation is the number 1 goal, and I will do whatever I can to make it happen!
Thanks for following, and keep the questions coming!
Psalm 1: 1-6:
“How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the path of sinners,
Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water,
Which yields its fruit in its season
And its leaf does not wither;
And in whatever he does, he prospers.
4 The wicked are not so,
But they are like chaff which the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6 For the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the wicked will perish.”
